About Benjamin Thomas Trotter Mitchell
Benjamin's given name at birth was Benjamin Trotter Mitchell. Later in his life one of his wives did not like the name "Trotter" and insisted that he change it. That is when he started going by the name Benjamin Thomas Mitchell. I have not been able to find if he had it legally changed or just started using "Thomas".
Benjamin "T." Mitchell was only two years old when his father decided to move to Ohio on the Western reserve. He was raised in the backwoods with little chance of an education until he turned seventeen years old. At that time he went to work for a Mr. Brown to learn the craft of a stone-cutter. It was very common for a son to follow his father's trade. His father was a shoemaker, so for Benjamin to learn the trade of a stone cutter begins to show the lord's hand in his life. He only worked at learning the stone cutting trade until he was twenty. He joined the LDS church in June of 1836.
In the spring of 1841, he moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he went to work laying brick there. When Joseph Smith told the Temple Committee to push for completion, he then labored constantly on the Temple until it was completed.
Benjamin was chosen along with eleven others to carve the oxen for the baptismal font. He also cut the first capital that was set on the Nauvoo Temple. At the age of 25, after only cutting stone for 8 years he carves what has become a master piece of art.
