About Benjamin Nichols, R-L21

A 1746 deed in which Benjamin Nicolls and "Darcas his wife" sell property in Dorchester Co., MD, is in the Maryland Archives Online [scanned copy in my files]. This is the earliest mention of Benjamin, Jr., being married. In 1746 and 1747 he appears to have divested himself of all the land that he inherited from his father.

R.B. Nichol Notes: A 2007 DNA sample taken from a living descendant of Levin Nichols, presumably this Benjamin's first cousin, son of his uncle John Nicolls, Jr., is an exact match with samples from two living descendants of Benjamin Nichol, b. 1769: David Green Nichol and Robert Ernest Nichol, my first cousins once-removed. As the immediate descendants of John Nicolls, Jr. do not include a Benjamin, this indicates that Benjamin and Levin most likely shared a grandfather, John Nicoll(s), Sr. Since all of the males named Benjamin thus far discovered in this family follow a single line of descent, I have taken the liberty of assuming that Benjamin Nichol, b. 1769, is also in this line, and not that of one of the four Nicolls uncles--Moses, Isaac, Joseph, and John--all of whose offspring [except possibly Moses'] seem to be accounted for. This assumption enables me to save data on these people in a logical manner, until I am proven wrong or right.

To date, this Benjamin Nicoll, married to Darcus Willis, is not known to have had children. Even so, we know that a Benjamin Nichol was born in Dorchester County in 1769, and that there was an Isaac Nichol(s) "of Benjamin" --this apparently to distinguish him from Isaac Nichols, Jr., his cousin--on the 1783 Caroline County Tax Assessment, owning land in that same area of Caroline County that had been Dorchester County until 1773. Most likely, Benjamin and Darcus Nicoll(s) had at least two sons, Isaac and Benjamin, both of whom appear to have moved to NC after the Revolution, to live among the Quakers and Nichollites in the Guilford Co. area.
