According to Early Western Augusta Pioneers by George Washington Cleek, he was the son of Benjamin Potts originally of Wales. He was in the iron business in New York and later moved to Pottstown, PA. Benjamin Jr. was born in Pottsville, PA and moved to Maryland. He and his wife then moved on the land in Bath County, VA that her father bought from the McFarland family. They later migrated to Stony Bottom in what is now Pocahontas County, WA.
