About Benjamin Sewell
He left Howe for London and joined the mahogany merchant firm Neck & Woodward. The company was in effect a family business as the Necks and Sewells had a long-standing relationship.
This company was mentioned in 1799 with the address 74 Bank-side. In 1802 the company was named Neck Son & Sewell, and possibly Benjamin was then a partner. In 1806 the address was Honduras Wharf, Bank-side. 1810-1865 the address was 1 Chatham Place, New Bridge, St.Blackfriars. The company description changed to timber merchants and in 1812 the company name changed to Sewell & Neck and in 1822 changed to Benjamin Sewell. In 1830 the company Norman & Co. was merged with the company and in 1832 it changed once again to (Norman)Newman & Sewell, in 1838 Sewell, Newman & Sewell. In 1840 the company description was merchants.. In 1844 the companies name was Benjamin Sewell & Sons. Benjamin died in 1849 and the firm was named Sewell Hanbury & Sewell, but in 1853 changed again to Sewell & Neck. In 1862-65 a change once again to Sewell Bros & Co, with address 8 Finch Lane (80 Cornhill), later Sewell & Neck traded from the same address. His nephew John Neck inherited the businnes and named in 1871 the company John Neck & Sons.
he was mentioned as a Cabinet-maker in 1810!
He lived possibly at his son Clares marriage in Charlton, Kent (Southwest on the outskirts of London). When he died in 1849 he was recorded living in Blackheath Park, Charlton. A witness to his death was a Sabina Skudder. The same Sabina Skudder was present at the death of his widow in 1850, she died in 6 Fountain Terrace, Campberwell.
