Benjamin Sharples

Son of Lydia Lewis and Joseph Sharples. Benjamin was born 11 mo 26, 1709 in Nether Providence Twp and died 3 mo 16, 1785 in Middletown Twp. He married (1) Edith Broom, daughter of Mary Alexander and James Broom She was born about 1718 and died 6 mo 13, 1744, at age 26. Benjamin married (2) Martha Mendenhall, daughter of Lydia Roberts and Benjamin Mendall, at Concord Friends Mtg on 3 mo 21, 1746.

Joseph, born 12 mo 19, 1737/1738 and died 9 mo 1, 1763, unmarried.
Benjamin, married Hannah Hollingshead and Sarah Rigby.
Edith, married Ziba Ferris.

Isaac, married Elizabeth Talbot.
Rebecca, born 10 mo 29, 1749 and died 2 mo 9, 1780, unmarried.
Martha, born 10 mo 28, 1751 and died 9 mo 7, 1763.
Ann, born 7 mo 1, 1754 and died 9 mo 4, 1763.
Aaron, married Mary Ellwood.
Amy, married Jesse Darlington.
Enoch, born 9 mo 15, 1760 and died 9 mo 15, 1763.
Unnamed son, born 2 mo 5, 1763 and died 4 mo 3, 1763.
Hannah, married Peter Yarnall.
Esther, married Jehu Garrett.
Sarah, married William Poole.
Samuel, born 11 mo 25, 1770 and died 9 mo 8, 1796 in Wilmington, Delaware, unmarried.

Benjamin purchased 387 acres in West Caln Twp in 1734 from his uncle Samuel Lewis. He conveyed this property to his father in 1736 and on the same date received from his parents the homestead in Middletown, with 150 acres of the original survey and a tract of 9 acres on the west side of Chester Creek in Aston Twp. He built a stone house in 1753, a little east from the first dwelling. This home, along with an addition made by grandson, Jesse Darlington, in 1802, became Jesse's home.

In Benjamin's will, dated 2 mo 10, 1785, he named his wife, and children Benjamin (deceased); Edith Ferris; Joshua; Aaron; Amy; Hannah; Hester; Sarah Sharples; Rebecca; Samuel; also daughter-in-law Elizabeth Sharples and her son Benjamin. He had 8 surviving children.
