Son of James Shreve (a son of William Shreve and Freelove Dyer) and Margaret Morgan. Benjamin married Mary Cutler on June 13, 1796 in Harrison County.

After Mary's premature death, Benjamin then married Eve Ice, a daughter of Indian Billy Ice, on September 26, 1804 in Monongalia County. A sister of Benjamin's (Elizabeth) married William Galloway "Indian Billy" Ice.
