a. It is speculated that he came to America with his uncle, Dr. William Snelling early in 1647. His father was the eldest son of Thomas Snelling, Esquire, of Plympton St. Mary, Chaddleswood, in Devonshire; Dr. William being the youngest son. His father died in 1639, and it is possible that his uncle, Dr. William perhaps served as a guardian for his deceased brother's son. John Snelling was first recorded in Saco, Maine, where he appeared in a list of freemen in 1653. He removed to Boston in 1657. His uncle, William, left no male descendants in America, his only son, William, having died, along with his wife and young daughter in a smallpox epidemic. Thus, most Snellings in colonial New England are believed to have descended from John.
