Benjamin f. Stewart, 83, retired plumber and a resident of Wichita for the past 27 years, died in a local hospital early Wednesday from injuries suffered Sunday evening when he was struck by a car driven by Carl J. Zenner, 18 at Glenn and Douglas. Mr. Stewart was enroute to the West Side Christian Church to attend the night services and was at the curb when he was struck. Zenner told police officers that he did not see Stewart. He felt the impact and after he had driven on, circled the block and returned to the scene of the accident. Bystanders by that time had lifted Stewart from the street and were aiding him until the ambulance arrived. Mr. Stewart suffered a fractured wrist, head injuries and cuts and bruises. Because of his advanced age his condition was regarded serious from the first.
He was born in Johnson county, Missouri. He lived in Pittsburg before coming to Wichita 27 years ago. He was associated with the West side Plumbing Company before his retirement 13 years ago. Surviving are three sons, A. J. Stewart 121 North Glenn, with whom he made his home; E. L. Stewart, Louisburg, MO and Emmett Stewart, Sedalia, MO; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Priestley, Huntington Park, CA; and Mary Stewart, Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Two granddaughters, Mrs. Dorothy Cathey and Mrs. Hazel Dennis reside in Wichita. Miss Stewart will arrive from Phoenix Wednesday night to attend the funeral.
Funeral services will be held Friday, the time to be set later, and the body will be taken to Sedalia, MO, for burial by the Jones funeral home.
