About Benjamin (428) Turley of ,Ozark,Missouri

428. BENJAMIN TURLEY (Benjamin, Ignatius, Paull) was born about 1826 in Indiana and died 18 January 1865. He married Louisa Holman who was born in March, 1830, in Tennessee and died about 1901.

On 19 August 1858 Benjamin and Louisa Turley sold forty acres in Section 34, T22, R15, in Ozark County.371 On 14 December 1860 they sold 120 acres in Ozark County to J. C. Fleety.372 fhey are listed in the 1850 and 1860 census of Ozark County.

1860 their post office was Falling Springs. Ozark County, Missouri.

It should be noted that there were two Benjamin F. Turleys in the Ozark County 1850 and 1860 census records. At this date [1980] it is not known which Benjamin belonged to Benjamin' Turley and which could have been the son of Jacob^ Turley. Because a Polly Turley is listed in 1860, age 56, in the family of Benjamin R. and Margaret Jane Turley, this Benjamin is listed as a child of Jacob Turley. Therefore, Benjamin Turley who married Louisa Holman is placed in the Benjamin Turley family. This is arbitrary and should be considered as such until proof can be found.

Another clue that Benjamin who married Louisa was the son of Benjamin Turley is given in a letter 6 April 1952 from Mrs. Sarah Cookinham to Lester F. Turley. Mrs. Cookinham, born in 1882, was the granddaughter of Sampson Turley (Benjamin3, Ignatius2, Paul 1). In all correspondence she listed a Benjamin as brother of Sampson. She further stated that he was a Captain in the "Rebel" army [upgrading of rank is not uncommon] and that Benjamin died "in a Northern prison - taken captive and was very sick. Grandfather Sampson, his bro. went to wherever he was - but he died before he arrived."

Benjamin F. Turley served as a private with Company H, Coffee's Regt., Missouri Cavalry.

He was captured 2 September 1864 in White County, Arkansas. He was sent to the Military Prison, Alton. Illinois, on 26 November 1864 and died there 18 January 1865 of chronic diarrhea. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Alton.
