Bernard Cohorst

BERNARD COHORST

Bernard "Ben" Cohorst, born July 3, 1879 and Matilda "Tillie" Meinhart, born March 14, 1880, were married at Island Grove on April 24, 1917. Bernard was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Feldhake) Cohorst, and Tillie was the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Mammoser) Meinhart. They had no children, but when they married, Tillie took Rosie Meinhart, age seven, along to live with her and Ben. Joseph , Lawrence and Rosie had moved in with Mrs. Joseph (Barbara) Meinhart Sr., after the death of their wife and mother, Mrs. Joseph (Frances) Meinhart Mrs. Joseph (Barbara) Meinhart Sr. died about two years later and Tillie took care of the children until her marriage to Ben at which time she took Rosie with her. Lawrence continued living with his father, and uncle, Mart Meinhart- Rose never married, and when Tillie broke her hip and Ben suffered a stroke, she spent twenty plus years taking care of them as they were both invalids, (see Rose Meinhart). Henry Cohorst, Ben's unmarried older brother, also made his home with Ben and Tillie after his retirement from working out of the area. Rosie also cared for him in his later years.

Tillie and later Rose, always had a fantastic garden, their cookie jar was always full, and no one ever stopped in and left without having "a little lunch"!

Matilda died on June 25, 1960 and Bernard died on April 21, 1969. Henry was born on March 17, 1870 and died on June 1, 1954. The home is still owned by Rose Meinhart. All three are buried in St Joseph's Cemetery.
