Bernhard Essroger

Captain Bernard Essroger died at Chicago, Ills., December 9, 1899.

Captain Essroger was born in Austria in 1834. He was there educated as a civil engineer, and when graduated emigrated to this country, and soon thereafter entered the U.S. Army, and was assigned to duty wit hthe commission engaged in surveying the proposed ship railway over the Isthmus of Tehauntepec.

When the Civil war broke out, he enlisted in the 5th Missouri Infantry, in which he was subsequently promoted to a captaincy, and rendered valuable and effective service, especially in the suppression of the Knights of the Golden Circle.

He was an enthusiastic member of our Society, and at all times greatly enjoyed meeting his old comrades of the Army of the Tennessee.

He leaves a widow and three children to mourn their irreparable loss.
