About Bernice Genevieve BOWEN

Last Rites Held For Bernice Bowen - Bernice Genevieve Bowen was born to J. Louis and Pearl. (Pickett) Bowen on April 11, 1910, near Rockford, Iowa. She moved with her parents to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1913, returning to the Rockford community in 1918. She was graduated from Rockford high School, attended Iowa State Teachers, College at Cedar Falls, and received her master's degree in religious education Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Most of her life was devoted to the education of children, having taught first in country schools in the Rockford area and later in a Quaker Indian School in New York State. For many years she was a religious education teacher in Covington, Kentucky and Middleport, Ohio. From 1957-1967 she taught fourth grade at Roosevelt School at Mason City, Iowa. For several years, Bernice cared for her aged mother, Mrs.Pearl Bowen, in Rockford. Surviving are her two sisters and their husbands: Ferne and Everett White, Mitchell, Iowa; Esther and Lester Kock of Rockford, Iowa, and one brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Elinor Bowen, Bremerton, Washington; eleven nieces and nephews and a host of friends and other relatives. Memorial services were held for Bernice Bowen Sunday, August 24, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor William Green officiating. Music was provided by Velda Clark, organist, and a duet by Larry and Sharon Hickok.
