Birthe/Berte left for New Zealand with her children May 7th 1887. Andreas was already there, according to the ship manifest. This must have been a misunderstanding between Birte/Berte and the official who registered her arrival, because according to a church book from Lier, she was a widow at the time she and five of her children left for NZ. But what is interresting is that the family were supposed to leave for Queensland, Australia already in 1881, accoeding to a church book listing. This is very strange, since Birte/Berte must have known that she was pregnant. She gave birth to Kristen in May 1881, and by then she had already given birth to six more children, so it is impossible that she did not know she was expecting.
So my THEORY is that Andreas Kristensen left for Australia or New Zealand on his own, and that his family were supposed to follow him later. Since Birte/Berte and the children did not leave until 1887, it is a possibility that it took that amount of time to raise money for their passage. It is also a possibility that Andreas died in Australia or on his way to New Zealand, and no one knew who he was, and therefore no one notified his family in Norway.
