About Bertha Arenas

Bertha was born on February 23, 1917 in a small town in Jalisco Mexico. Her father, Charles Elliott, was originally from Highland Park, California, working as manager of Cinco Minas Silver Company and living in the Company town of Magdalena. Her mother, Rebekah Elliot (Carillo), was from Guadalajara, Mexico. In 1926, the family moved to Pomona, California. The mining company was closing down and Charles did not think it was safe for the family to stay in Mexico. In Pomona, her father became a Congregational minister, and her mother watched over the family of 10. They later moved to Ontario, CA and Bertha graduated from Chaffee High School in 1936. After several jobs, she went to work with the City Engineer of San Marino. She met Carlos, the love of her life, at the Hollywood Palladium. Carlos was transferred to New York and Bertha followed to marry him (December 10, 1943). In New York, she became a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue and worked there while Carlos was serving in the Merchant Marine and the US Navy. In 1946, Carlos and Bertha returned to California, where Bertha became the heart and soul of her home and the family business. In1950, she gave birth to her beloved daughter, Christina. Bertha was fully involved with Christina's activities. She was a Camp Fire Girl leader for many years. Bertha was a wonderful grandmother to her grandson, Sean, and when Christina passed away in 1986, Bertha continued raising him. Through ups and downs, she was always a wonderful and caring daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.
