According to Bertha's obituary, her childhood was spent on a farm near Narka, Republic County, Kansas, until she married Jesse James Carpenter on March 16, 1915. The obituary also states Bertha resided in Jewell County, Kansas, where she died. Early in life Bertha converted and joined the Methodist Church. Bertha's obituary stated she died in a Superior, Nebraska, hospital of "uremic poisoning", which was an old-fashioned term for kidney failure.
