Morrison says she is either Bessie Gunn, or Bessie Rorison, but gives no documentation (Leonard Morrison, History of the Sinclair Family in Europe and America (1896)). Some sources give her name as Bessie Roisen. She was probably Bessie Rorison Gunn. The Rorisons were a branch of the Henderson Gunns, who lived in Caithness rather than with the main family in Sutherland. Some online sources give her place of birth as Stemster, suggesting that she is thought to have belonged to the family of Henderson of Stemster.
Although she is often given as a second wife of John Sinclair, her children were illegitimate, so she must have been his mistress.
