Bessie Emma Gilleland was born to Samuel Washington and Matilda Barbara (Harben) Gilleland in Dawson County, Georgia. Bessie came from the Harben/Grogan family who were big in Dawson County Georgia, and the Gilleland/Brock family who were big in Hall and Jackson County in Georgia. In 1906 she married Charley Lafayette Phillips and together they had six children: Ola Mae (Waldrop), Coy Pauline (Roper/Smothers), Broughton Blondie, Charlie Dean, John Thomas, and Grace Lucille (Gilbert). Bessie and Charley later moved to Alabama and stayed there until their death. Bessie died in 1976.
