About Betsey Stevens Johnston

'NOTE: Altho she is recorded in baptism records, marriage, and census' as BETSEY STEVENS BALDWIN, she is also written as Elizabeth S. Johnston in her father Woolsey Baldwin's Will.'

Betsey Stevens Baldwin, dau. of Woolsey Baldwin and Rachel Miller, was b. Feb. 9, 1972; bapt. Apr. 8,1792 at the First Presby Church, Cranbury, NJ; she m. on Oct. 5,1820, in Monmouth Co., New Jersey, with MICHAEL JOHNSTON.

This is part of a transcript from the "Old Red Notebook of Edna Zuber Swanson" that my aunt, Mary Helen Johnston Passow, copied when she visited Edna, probably back in the 1960s or 1970s. Mary Helen had boxes and boxes of notes (now in the hands of her son, John Passow) that she collected over many years of travel and research for our family history. I copied these notes because, at that time (early 1980s), a copy machine was not that easy to find.

"Elizabeth Stevens Baldwin was a woman of unusual intellect, culture, refinement; old school, Presbyterian, VERY devout! She was close friends with her aunt, Lucinda McMichael Sanders, oldest sister of her daughter-in-law*. Lucinda, Betsy, and a neighbor, Mrs. Howard, all died within a year of each other. She had six children: three sons lost in the Civil War and one lived to 1886, no children. John W was taken prisoner in the war and never seen again. Baldwin was in the Cavalry and was wounded."

Lucinda was the older sister of Louisiana Elizabeth McMichael who married Baldwin Johnston, son of Betsy Stevens Baldwin and Michael Johnston (1789-1870). Lucinda passed away in 1874, so ESB Johnston must have passed away within a year of that. She was living (widowed) in Bibb Co., GA, as of the 1870 census, and her husband is listed on the Mortality Schedule for 1870, in Bibb Co., GA, but I cannot find information on where either one might be buried.
