Dr. Bevil Granville Wyche, named for his paternal uncle Beverly Granville Wyche, was born just before Christmas 1827 to James and Pamela Evans Wyche in the family home, Wychewood, in Granville County, North Carolina. He studied medicine and dentistry at Emory and Henry College, the oldest institution of higher learning in Southwest Virginia. Dr. Wyche lived a bachelor country doctor's life residing in boarding homes until the American Civil War when he served in the North Carolina 33rd Infantry and Militia. In Confederate service, Dr. Wyche died in hospital in Winchester, Virginia at the age of 34 years and 10 months and was buried in the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery.
