Borghild Olavsdatter Store-Dal

Borghild Olavsdatter er kjent som kong Sigurd Jorsalfares frille og kong Magnus Blindes, mor. Hun levde sannsynligvis innenfor perioden 1090 til 1150. Borghild er en av få kristne kvinner som er omtalt i Snorre Sturlasons Snorres kongesagaer. Magnussønnenes saga del 19 gir flere opplysninger om hennes familie og samtid. Hun har endatil fått en beskrivelse som: (...) ei framifrå vakker kvinne, og så var hun klok og hadde mange kunnskaper.

Borghild kom fra gården Store-Dal, som i Snorres kongesagaer blir oppgitt å ligge i Åmord, dagens Borge i Østfold. Det har blitt diskutert om dette var en korrekt geografisk plassering av gården. I dag hersker det enighet om at sagaens Store-Dal tilsvarer gården Storedal i Skjeberg, Østfold.

Kildene spriker noe i forhold til tidsangivelsen, men alle viser til at kong Øystein Magnusson oppholdt seg store deler av vinteren 1115-1116 eller 1116-1117 i Borg. Borghild og familien hennes oppholdt seg også der, og over tid utviklet hun et vennskap med kong Øystein. Den følgende sommeren dro kong Øystein nordover, mens hans halvbror og samkonge, kong Sigurd Jorsalfar, kom østpå. Selv en god stund etter at kong Øystein hadde forlatt Borgarsysle, fortsatte folkesnakket. For å stanse ondsinnede rykter dro Borghild tilbake til Borg,fastet og bar jernbyrd for å vise at vennskapet med kongen hadde vært i ordnede former. Hun besto jernbyrdsprøven og «renset seg» på denne måten for folkesnakket.

Kong Sigurd holdt på denne tiden til i Konghelle. Da han hørte om Borghilds jernbyrd, dro han i all hast nordover til Store-Dal. Det fortelles at han på én dag red så langt som to store dagsreiser ellers. Han kom til gards, ble der om natten, tok Borghild til frille og førte henne bort med seg.

Det er antatt at Borghild fulgte med kong Sigurd til Konghelle, for så å returnere til Store-Dal for å føde sin sønn, Magnus, der. Det er reist en bauta til minne om kong Magnus Blinde på gården Storedal i Skjeberg.

Borghild Olavsdatter is known as King Sigurd Jorsalfares frille and King Magnus Blindes, mother. She probably lived within the period 1090 to 1150. Borghild is one of the few Christian women mentioned in Snorre Sturlason's Snorre's royal sagas. Magnussønnene's saga part 19 provides more information about her family and contemporaries. She has even received a description such as: (...) a beautiful woman from the front, and then she was wise and had a lot of knowledge.

Borghild came from the farm Store-Dal, which in Snorre's royal sagas is stated to be located in Åmord, today's Borge in Østfold. It has been discussed whether this was a correct geographical location of the farm. Today there is agreement that the saga's Store-Dal corresponds to the farm Storedal in Skjeberg, Østfold.

The sources differ somewhat in relation to the time, but all point out that King Øystein Magnusson spent large parts of the winter 1115-1116 or 1116-1117 in Borg. Borghild and her family also stayed there, and over time she developed a friendship with King Øystein. The following summer, King Øystein went north, while his half-brother and co-king, King Sigurd Jorsalfar, came east. Even a good while after King Øystein had left Borgarsysle, the popular talk continued. To stop malicious rumors, Borghild returned to Borg, fasted and carried an iron burden to show that the friendship with the king had been in order. She passed the iron burden test and "cleansed herself" in this way of the people's talk.

King Sigurd lived at this time in Konghelle. When he heard of Borghild's iron burden, he hurried north to Store-Dal. It is said that in one day he rode as far as two large day trips otherwise. He came to the farm, stayed there at night, took Borghild prisoner and took her away with him.

It is believed that Borghild accompanied King Sigurd to Konghelle, and then returned to Store-Dal to give birth to her son, Magnus, there. A memorial has been erected in memory of King Magnus Blinde on the farm Storedal in Skjeberg.
