About Bracy Bowen

Bracy BOWEN of Rutherford, North Carolina was a private in the Company commanded by Capt. Vaughn of the Regt commanded by Col. BURWELL in the Virginia Line. Born Mecklenburg, VA 1762. Said he had no proof of his age, but judged his age by knowing the difference between his age and his brother's, who had a record of his age. Lived in Mecklenburg Co. VA until 1822, then moved to Rutherford Co. NC, where he resided at the time of application. Character witness, Theo Birchett, Esq. (Name not clear)

Bracy Bowen

Bracy Bowen can be proven as a son of David Bowen Sr by Mecklenburg Deed Book 14, p 462-463, 10 Aug 1811 in which Bracy and several brothers and sisters as "legatees of David Bowen" sold 25 acres near Buffalo Creek.

He first appeared on the Mecklenburg tax lists as a male over 21 in 1783 which would place his date of birth as 1762 or earlier. This agrees with his Revolutionary pension application in which he states he was born in Mecklenburg Co in 1762. He last appeared on the Mecklenburg tax records in 1807, but according to his pension application, he remained in Mecklenburg until 1822 when he moved to Rutherford Co, NC. His brother Lewis Bowen was already a resident of Rutherford Co as early as 1820.

The following copies of Bracy Bowen's penison application and a 1972 article concerning Bracy Bowen were provided by Gordon Parks. Note that the application is in fact only 4 pages long, but each page was copied in two parts.

These records were originally published in The BOWEN News Exchange in January, April, July, and October 1992. They were transcribed by Marguerite Mason from the microfilm, "Roll No. M805-108, Revolutionary War, Selected Records of Pension and Bounty Land Warrants.

Due to limited space available in the newsletter, the entire listing was not printed - I only picked out genealogy highlights, with dates, names and places to identify the individual in question. In some cases the soldier served in more than one unit; sometimes a few months in one unit, then served with other units at a later date. Complete records may be obtained from the Archives.

Abbreviations were used freely in the transcription because of space. Below is a list of such abbreviations as you might find.

b = born; d = died; mar = married; comm = commanded; lvg = living; app = application; res = resided/resident; Co = County/Company; Regt = Regiment; pvt = Private; Capt = Captain; Col = Colonel; Two letter state abbreviations apply, for the most part.
