About Brev. Brig. Gen. (USA) Justin Dimick

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A long time officer in the United States Army, he served from his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1819 to his retirement in midst of the Civil War in 1863, seeing action during the Mexican War. When the Civil War began he was the Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd United States Regular Artillery. Deemed too old for field service, he was appointed commander of the Fort Warren Military Prison, located in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel of the 1st United States Regular Artillery before his retirement. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "long, gallant and faithful services to his country". His son-in-law was Union Brevet Brigadier General Joseph Roberts. His son, Lieutenant Justin E. Dimick, fought in the Regular Army artillery branch during the Civil War, and was killed in action at the Battle of Chancellorsville.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 5 2020, 21:33:39 UTC
