About Brev. Maj. Charles Allen, (USA)

The son of Sarah Allen, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Dauphin County April 18, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27, 1861, as 1st lieutenant of Co. G, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves (35th Pennsylvania Infantry). He was wounded at Fredericksburg December 13, 1862, but returned to duty and promoted to captain April 3, 1863. Wounded again at the Wilderness in May 1864, his "meritorious service" in that conflict earned him a brevet to major to date March 13, 1865. He also served with the 1st U.S. Veteran Volunteers, dates unknown at this time.

He married Mary E. unk. and fathered Alvin J. (b. @1868) and Sarah K. (b. @1873). By 1880, he was living in Harrisburg. In 1896, Mary applied for a widow's pension from New Jersey, apparently having moved there to live with her son.

His grave apparently - and strangely - is unmarked.
