Second lieutenant and first lieutenant 4th artillery 5 Aug 1861; captain 5 February 1867; major 2nd artillery 28 August 1891; lieutenant colonel 6 artillery 8 March 1898; colonel artillery corps 2 February 1901; brevet captain 31 Dec 1862 for gallantry and meritorious services in the battle of Stone River, Tennessee; and major 20 Sept 1863 for gallantry and meritorious services in the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia.

Major Frank Guest Smith was Secretarty to Gen. George B. McClellan while the latter was President of the Ohio and Mississippi R. R. When the Civil War opened he offered his services to the Government, and received appointment in the artillery branch of the army; he distinguished himself in various engagements, particularly at Chickamauga. The Records of the Living Officers of the U. S. Army contain his record in full. He is now Major of the 2d Artillery, and Secretary of the Commission in charge of the Government Park, embracing the battlefields of Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga, Pilot Knob, and Missionary Ridge.
