He was the son of Thomas Dunlop and Mary Campbell Dunlop.
On December 10, 1913 as Lieutenant Robert Horace Dunlop, he married Ruth Ord Mason at Galveston, Texas. They were the parents of one child.
Robert Horace Dunlop was in the Philippines from 1910 to 1912 and then went to Tientsin, China. He was assigned in Peking with the 15th Infantry and in July 1917 with the Marine Guard during the revolution to restore the monarchy.
After assignments in the United States, he was at the Office of the Adjutant General in the American headquarters in Paris, France in 1919. Then he went to Coblenz, Germany and in 1920 he was assigned to the Adjutant General's office in the District of Columbia. He was Adjutant of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia and returned to the District of Columbia in 1927.
In 1931, he was Assistant Adjutant General of the 3rd Corps Area in Baltimore. He also served at Fort Hayes, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia and Hawaii. In 1942, he returned to the District of Columbia as Acting Adjutant General. In 1946, he retired from the United States Army. His awards included the Legion of Merit.
He was a former national President of the Sojourners, which was a national fraternal organization for commissioned, warrant and senior non-commissioned military officers, who were Masons. He was also a member of the Morning Star Lodge No. 37 of Vermont, F.A.A.M. He died at the age of 83 years on Sunday, January 18, 1970 at Walter Reed General Hospital after a long illness. He was a resident of the Roosevelt Apartments at 2101 16th Street Northwest.
He was survived by one grandson and one granddaughter, both of New York City. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Mason Dunlop and their son, Robert Horace Dunlop Jr. Services were held at the Fort Myer Chapel with interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
