Buckner Thurston Magill was born in Virginia in 1815, graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1837, commissioned as Assistant Surgeon in the United States Navy in 1838. He then served on board the USS Cyane of the Mediterranean Squadron from 1838 to 1839, was on hone leave in 1839, and joined the USS Ohio, also of the Mediterranean Squadron, as surgeon in 1839-40. He took ill with consumption and was on his way back to the United States on board the bark "John Brouwer" when he died at sea on December 9, 1840.
