Brief overview:

Buks (47), was bludgeoned to death with a spade, near the Soetdoring Outdoor Club, whilst on a camping/caravan trip with his family at the Vaal River, on 2nd November 2016. According to Buks brother Frans, Buks, his wife Susan, and their three children and two of their children's friends went camping along the Vaal River on. In the early hours of the morning, four attackers assaulted Susan in the family's caravan.

Buks, who was sitting by the fire was knocked unconscious with a spade. The children were threatened with a hammer, and the 12-year-old boy was forced into the family's car and forced to provide information about the family. "The family was detained for about an hour while the attackers devoured the family's dinner, played music and danced and celebrated macabre." Frans said. According to Frans, Susan was repeatedly assaulted with an unknown object during this time. The attackers then inflicted further blows with a spade to the unconscious Buks.

The attackers fled with two cell phones and a laptop. Susan and the children waited until it was quiet before she loaded Buks into the family's bakkie and rushed to hospital. Buks was pronounced dead on arrival. Susan sustained head wounds had stitches. The 12-year-old boy sustained a minor injury to his arm and the other children were unharmed.
