About Burchard Johanson Precht
(b Bremen, 24 Oct 1651; d Stockholm, 26 Feb 1738). Wood-carver. From 1674 he was working in Sweden, where he collaborated with the architect Nicodemus Tessin the younger, after whose designs he executed altarpieces, pulpits, crucifixes, tomb ornaments and furniture. In these works both artists were influenced by the figure style of Gianlorenzo Bernini and by contemporary French ornamental design, such as that of Jean Le Pautre, Daniel Marot the elder and Jean Brain I, using acanthus scrolls and leaves, flowers, garlands etc (see SWEDEN, fig. 19). Precht's best-known works are the royal stalls (1684-5) and pulpit (1698-1702) in Stockholm Cathedral and the pulpit (1707-9) and altarpiece (1725-8) created for Uppsala Cathedral. The Uppsala altarpiece, depicting various New Testament themes, has been housed since 1906 in the Gustav Vasa Church in Stockholm, a fine neo-Baroque church practically built around it. However, it has lost the airy setting of its original location, where it did not have to compete with paintings or sculpture
