About Byron Jason Whitesides, Sugpiaq and Unangax̂ Genealogy

I am Curator that is dedicated to Native Alaskan genealogy for all the ethnic groups.. My personal background is Caucasian, Native American and Alaska Native. My fathers ancestors were Algonquian, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Huron, Métis and Caucasian. My mother's side was Unangax̂, Sugpiaq, Tlingit (Kolosh), Ingalik (Deg Hit'an) Athabascan, Yakut of Northeast Siberia and Caucasian.

I love doing this research and learning about my ancestors, as well as helping others do the same. It's maybe more important to me because my mother was adopted out at birth. Alaska has a strict law regarding sealed adoption records. It took her nearly 60 years, with assistance, just to obtain her original birth certificate. A few years back, I became the first and only person in my immediate family to become BIA certified. The rest of my family are not BIA certified, but they are tribal members of the Ketchikan Indian Community.

My references, as well as photographs, come through my interaction with Native families, a tremendously large library of rare and out-of-print books in my personal collection, plus amazing records that were given to me by the Aleutian Pribilof Island Association http://www.apiai.org/ and the Native Village of Afognak http://www.afognak.org/ to support my endeavor to document our ancestors.

If you require assistance in researching your lineage or if you have photographs or data that you can provide to enhance the existing profiles, please contact me.
