About CMSGT Robert Clarence Newkirk

Robert was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Covington, Ind. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October 1946 and served in the U.S. occupation forces in Japan after World War II. He continued his service in the Air Force when it became a separate branch of the U.S. military in 1947, and marched in the Ceremonial Parade. He remained stationed in Japan and was present there at the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. While serving in the Far East he received the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Good Conduct Medal and Korean Service Medal. Following his overseas service, he was reassigned to Kirtland AFB at Albuquerque, N.M. While stationed at Kirtland, he attended a dance held at the Chesterfield Club, and it was here he met his wife of 59 years, Joann Archebique. He achieved top secret security clearance and served in special assignments at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif., Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz. While at Davis-Monthan, he earned an Air Force Commendation Medal. He also served in French Morocco and in Panama at both Howard and Albrook air bases. He earned an Air Force Commendation Medal (first oak leaf cluster) for his duties in Panama. He returned to Travis Air Force Base where he retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1969 with an honorable discharge for 23 years of service. As a civilian he worked at a Volvo motors dealership and Behr of America. In 1982, he became a small business owner of Bob-N- Equipment Co. He continued his business until his retirement in 1999.
