Notes from Jack Aldridge: Caleb Hampton (Hamp) Aldridge was twice married; first to Sophie Floyd to which was born one son, George Gilliam Aldridge; and secondly, to Betty Floyd McSwain, sister to Sophie Floyd. Betty Floyd was first married to John McSwain who was killed in the Civil War and later married Caleb Hampton (Hamp) Aldridge, who was widowed by the death of Sophie Floyd Aldridge shortly after the birth of George G. Aldridge. To Caleb Hampton Aldridge and Betty Floyd McSwain Aldridge were born seven seven (7) children, these being: Belle, Winnie,Crowell, Henry, Fannie, Algie, and Sally.

From: "The Bible of Caleb Hampton Aldridge" on the Job's children blog: Caleb Hampton Aldridge was the oldest brother of my Great-Great Grandmother, Frances Julina Aldridge Davis. He was the son of Henry Garner Aldridge and Priscilla Murray Aldridge, otherwise known as Garner and Prussia, while Caleb Hampton was better known as "Hamp". He was named for Garner's father Caleb Aldridge, Jr., the progenitor of the Aldridge family in Stanly County, North Carolina. Hamp was born in 1843 and died in 1912. He was married twice, to sisters. First, to Sophia Floyd and second to her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Floyd McSwain Aldridge, a widow. They were daughters of Josiah Floyd, Jr. and Sarah "Sally" Easley Floyd.


Notes for Caleb Hampton Aldridge: was a Corporal in Company C, 42nd Regiment NC State Troops during the civil War. He enlisted at the age of 19 in Salisbury, Rowan Co. NC. on March 17,1862.

He was fair complected, 5'9", brown hair and hazel eyes. He was promoted to the rank of 4th corporal sometime during the month of April 1864.His name appears on a Roll of Honor as being promoted. Cpl. Aldridge was captured in the fighting that took place at Wise's Fork on the south side of the Neuse River along the railroad tracks near Kinston NC on 3-10-1865. In this battle 107 wounded,11 killed and 16 captured of whom he was one. He was sent to Point Lookout Prison MD. He remained there until he was released and allowed to return home on 6-23-1865. He fell asleep on top of the boxcar on his way home and almost fell off the train. Story told to his grandson, Dewey, who told it to Joyce and Garey.
