Caleb Coates

Caleb Coates was the son of Moses Coates and second wife Mary Vickers. He was born in 1790. He married Elizabeth Gilbert in 1810 at Fallowfield MM. They had nine children.

[NOTE: source text says son of Samuel, grandson of Samuel, but the grandfather did not have a son named Samuel. Using the author’s numbering system, I can tell that this was a child of a second marriage. The grandfather did have a son Moses who married twice and had a son named Caleb.]

Children of Caleb Coates and wife Elizabeth Gilbert:

• Ann Lucretia Coates, born in 1811
• Edwin Howard Coates, born in 1813
• Dr. John Gilbert Coates, born in 1815 in Coatesville, Chester County, Pennsylvania and died in 1862 at Culpepper Court House, Virginia. He was buried at Big Lick, Roanoke County, Virginia. He died of pneumonia.
• Isaac Stackhouse, born 1818 and died 1818, age 4 months
• Charles Stone Coates, died 1837 after illness of 8 days.
• William Bailey Coates, born 1823
• Esther Virginia Coates, born 1827
• Lewis Montgomery Coates, born 1829, married Mary E. Dull in 1860, no children
• Elmer Ruan Coates, born 1831 and 1889 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Married Elizabeth Phillips Bonnell.
