Accident No. 2. - October 8th. This accident occurred at Franklin Junior Mine, by which Caleb Stephens lost his life. The deceased was working in the bottom of No. 2 shaft and a party of timbermen were working above him. In lowering a piece of timber, it by some means be came loosened from the rope and fell down the shaft, striking Stephens on the right side. He expired a short time af ter being struck. An inquest was held before Justice Perry. Six witnesses were examined at the inquest, but nothing could be learned as to how the timber became detached from the rope. The jury returned the following verdict: “We, the jury, find that Caleb Stephens came to his death by being accidentally struck by a piece of timber, in No. 2 shaft, Franklin Junior Mine, on the 8th day of October, 1898."
