Callaghan was born when his parents were living at 6 Makepeace Avenue, and his father was working as a laborer.

In 1942, when he filed his WWII draft registration card, he and Alice were living at 16 Madison Street, their phone number was 1652-W, and he was employed by the city of Taunton Police department. At that time he was 5' 8 ½" tall, weighed 180 pounds, and had brown eyes and brown hair.

Page 1 Callaghan J. McCarthy, 65, retired Taunton policeman, was found dead this morning at his home, 16 Madison Street where he had been living alone since the death of his wife. Examination by Medical Examiner Andrew J. Leddy placed time of death at Tuesday morning police said. Neighbors had reported that they had not seen the retired patrolman about his home the past couple of days. The body was found in bed about 10:30 a.m. by Patrolman Thomas W. Devereaux and John O'Connell of the plainclothes division. Dr. Leddy said McCarthy apparently died in his sleep. McCarthy had been in ill health several months. His death saddened the city and in particular the police department, where he was one of the most popular men to serve with the force.
