By the middle of the Civil War Bennett had been a US Cav officer who had quickly resigned his commission while his friend Jesse was fighting for the Confederacy. Bennett's older brother's sympathies were with the CSA as well: John Adam wended his way southward and ended up in Water Valley, Mississippi.
