Served in the Shenandoah c. 1864 : see letter of Jesse Weber Bean to his brother Edwin (filed here on geni) "If Martin is alive yet I expect he could tell more about the old Troop than anybody else (.) Martin was Captain when I left and ____ knew who came after him (.) At the time Hunter made his raid to Lynchburg we captured some Montgomery Co men but I did not know then they were from Roxborough( hard to read?) (. O)ne of them told me that the Montgomery Troopers were a picketing in the Shenandoah Valley and thought that Capt Martin had command of the batthery but did not know for certain."

Was in California for a shortn while after the Nativist riots and the US entry into the Mexican War but before the Civil war.
