About Capt. Esbon Sanford

He entered the service of the Hudson Bay Co. and spent the winter of 1672/73 at Hudson Bay as a mate on the dogger"Messenger"under Captain Robert Morris.

In 1674/75 he was a mate on the "Prince Rupert" Under Zachariah Gilliam.

He left the company soon after that but the company deceided to reemploy him but could not agree on the terms because Esbons demands were so extraordinary.

On Feb 3 1681 they came to an agreement.March 1681 was given command of the ship "Albemarle" amd on 5/31/1682 was appointed deputy governor of the company's settlement at Port Nelson.

Capt Benjamin Gilliam (Zachariah's brother) made a poaching voyage to the Bay in 1683.

Because of Esbon's connection with Zachariah his commision was revoked of the "Albemarle". He was ordered home to Boston as was Zacariah.

They were to be arrested but when the orders were finally sent Esbon and Zachariah had been dead for months.

Zachariah died when his ship the "Prince Rupert" crashed into Ice inon 10/21/1682.

Esbon lost his life in the Company's Service in the attack made on Port Nelson by the French from Quebec under Radisson.
