Rosanna (Anderson) Doniphan was the only child of Captain George Anderson, who was sheriff of Stafford County 1709-1710 and a gentleman justice in 1714, and his wife nee Mary Matthews was the daughter of John Matthews, an early inhabitant of the Potomac Creek neighborhood; he received a grant from the Proprietors of the Northern Neck for 2,466 acres on Little Hunting Creek in 1694
