About Capt. James Alexander Gilmore, Sr

  • findagrave.... ;
  • The home of the Gilmore's (Gilmour's) was Craigmiller Castle, Scotland. Before the seige of Londonderry, they went to Norther Ireland, and were in that seige. About 1730, James Gilmore came to America and settled in PA. About 1737, with his wife, Martha Dennison Gilmore and family, he came to what was then Augusta Co., but is now Rockbridge Co., VA, as did, also , his sons Joseph & William Gilmore. Joseph & William evidently continued to work the plantation jointly until 1816, when they divided it. William emigrated to Ohio in 1818.
  • James Gilmore, Sr. left a sizable estate to his family, and in his will --presented Feb. 11, 1783-- named his wife, Martha, and his 11 living children (listed in order named in will, and not by dobs): Joseph, William, Samuel, John, James, Mary Foster, Margaret Anderson, Martha Hall, Agnus, Isabella, Elenor. James' son Robert Gilmore, who preceded him in death, was killed by Indians on 10 Nov 1777 near Fort Randolf, VA.

James was active in his community and church, and served in the Virginia Militia from as early as 1758 through the Revolutionary War, earning the rank of Captain.
