Served with Quarter Master Corps, Iowa Volunteers, 1861 - 1866, Union Army; during the "War of the Rebellion".

Died in Loveland, Colorado. His remains were returned to College Springs where he was laid to rest at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Section 71-E. He lies next to his wife, Mary Annabelle, "Anna" Mills Beals.
