About Capt. John Prentice

Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700, page 601

  • married (1) Esther/Hester Nichols in 1652 in New London, CT and she died January 1679/80; (2) her cousin Esther Nichols, daughter of Caleb after 1680; (3) Rebecca Parker, daughter of Ralph, married June 19 1685 New London, CT.

Born May 6, 1628, England and died Jan. 1, 1691 in Mystic, New London County, Connecticut, USA.

Born in Chelmsford, Essex, England to Valentine Prentice and his wife Alice B_____. John arrived at the age of three in Massachusetts aboard the Lyon with his parents November 2, 1631.

His occupations were recorded as being both a blacksmith and seaman. He lived in Boston in 1631; Roxbury in 1632; and New London in 1652. He retained his membership in the Roxbury church and baptized his children there.

He married first Hester Nichols, who was the daughter of John Nichols and his wife Grace. He married second Esther Nichols, daughter of Caleb Nichols and his wife Anne Ward. Hester and Esther were first cousins. (John and Caleb were brothers.) His third wife was Rebecca Parker, with whom he had no issue.

He married Hester Nichols about 1651 and they had issue:

  1. John P. Prentice who married Sarah Jones
  2. Joseph Prentice
  3. Jonathan Prentties, who married Elizabeth
  4. Esther Prentice, who married Benadam Gallup
  5. Peter Prentice
  6. Stephen Prentice
  7. Mercy Prentice
  8. Hannah Prentice
  9. Thomas Prentice, twin
  10. Elizabeth Prentice, twin

He married Esther Nichols 1680 in Connecticut and they had issue:

  1. Valentine Prentice (note; she died shortly after his birth)

He married Rebecca Parker 1685, there was no issue from this marriage. (Note: I have found no record for a Ralph Prentice, who some believe was a son of his third marriage. Rebecca was 57 years old when she married John.)

John Valentine Prentice was born 6 May 1628 at Chelmsford, Essex, England and died 1691 at New London, New London Co., CT. “John Prentice, son of Valentine & Alice (_______) Prentice, born in England, came from Roxbury, Mass., to New London, Conn. He married first, about 1651, Hester[Esther] Nichols, born about 1635, died at New London, 6 Jan. 1679/80, daughter of John Nichols of Fairfield, Conn., by his unknown first wife; she was mother of his first eight children. He married second, probably by 1683, Esther Nichols, born at Stratford, Conn., 18 Feb. 1652/3, daughter of Caleb and Anne (Ward) Nichols of Stratford and Woodbury, Conn., and his first wife’s first cousin although much younger; she was mother of his ninth child, Valentine, and presumably died at his birth or shortly after. He married third, by contract dated 12 June 1685 [New London Deeds, 4:51], Rebecca Parker, the jointure referring to any children he may have by her. John Prentice apparently died late in 1691. Rebecca was mother of his tenth child, Ralph.”[1]

"John Prentice, New London's blacksmith, who turned ship captain, became a consummate sailor capable of journeying to Europe and outsailing pirates. He owned the largest boat built in New London during the seventeenth century, but died fairly young at the age of sixty-three in 1691. He had eleven children with his first wife Hester Nichols, and one more child with his second wife Esther Nichols. Three of his sons continued the maritime activities he initiated and his eldest son, John, was also Commander of Fort New London for many years." [2]
