About Capt. John Jonathan Smith
- John Smith - Find A Grave - MEMORIAL ID 33981408
Information from Find A Grave:
His will was dated 19 Jan 1794, and proved 24 Mar 1795.
Husband of Sarah Hopkins Smith, married Oct 31,1731.
NOTE: Some older sources suggest he was a son of Christopher Smith and Mary Stephens Smith. However, more recent research in NEHGR suggests otherwise, and, more recently, yDNA studies have shown that direct male descendants of John Smith are not genetically related to Christopher Smith of Rhode Island. It is possible that John was descended from Joseph Smith, who came from Northumberland County, England, to North Carolina. Joseph's descendants moved to Rhode Island.
Children: Richard Smith, Joseph Smith, Oziel Smith, Thomas Smith, Jonathan Smith, Hope Smith, and Mercy Smith Peckham. (Mercy is also called Sarah in Stephen R Smith's 1852 memoir, and she is called Mary in John Smith's 1794 will.)
