The Brockways of this area are all descendents of Capt Jonathan Brockway, a native of Lyme, Ct., who married PHEBE SMITH, of that town. He was a sea-faring man, winning his commission or title in that calling, and when tired of his roving life he removed from Connecticut to New Hampshire, settling in Washington about 1773 near the outlet of Millen Pond, which has since become known as Brockway's Pond. He became a big landowner and influential citizen. He marched at the head of small companies upon both the Ticonderoga alarms, though their services were not needed. His first wife died April 5, 1791 and he m. second REBECCA JONES, dau. of William Jones, of Hillsboro. He d. in Bradford, at the res. of his son Asa, in Jan., 1829 at a very advanced age; Rebecca d. in Washington, a centaurian.

Children were: Capt. Asa. After Phebe's death he re-married to REBECCA JONES of Hillsboro and had daughter Rebecca (5/15/1793, b NH); the only child of perhaps a couple of others to live.

Captain Jonathan Brockway The book "The History of Washington, New Hampshire." It has a lot of information about Jonathan Brockway. It is said that he made his fortune following the sea. He married Phebe Smith in Lyme, CT and had 7-8 children there. Between 1772-4 they removed to what was to become Washington, NH and had considerable property there. He got the title Captain from captaining a New Hampshire Militia Company from Washington that twice answered the Ticonderoga Alarms during the Revolutionary War. Both times they were turned back, having arrived too late. He died at Bradford, NH at the home of his son Asa."
