  • In the absence of records bearing specifically upon the matter it is the general supposition that Edward Bangs married second, Rebecca ---- probably Tracy. Recently the suggestion has been advanced that the second wife was Rebecca the sister of Rev. Peter Hobart. This is supported to some extent by some traditions in the family, but no positive information has been thus far disclosed and the query "Who was Rebecca" remains unanswered.
  • The following dates of birth of his children may not be entirely correct, but are based upon the best data available.

In a deed of 22 June 1651, he was joined as grantor by his wife Rebecca (PCR 12:209). He made his will on 19 Oct. 1677, calling himself aged eighty-six years, and he named his sons: Jonathan, John, Joshua; his daughter Howe, daughter Higgens, daughter Hall, daughter Merrick, and daughter Atwood; the children of his daughter Rebecca, deceased; and his son Jonathan's oldest son Edward (Ply. Colony PR 3:2:106). In an agreement of 6 March 1677/78, Jonathan Bangs agreed that the land bequeathed to his son Edward could be used by Jonathan's brother John until Edward came of age (PR 3:2:105). Dawes-Gates 2: 67 gives his children from his marriage to Lydia Hicks as: John, who married Hannah Smalley, and from his marriage to Rebecca (Possibly Hobart), Rebecca, who married Jonathan Sparrow; Sarah, who married Thomas Howes, Jr.; Jonathan, who married (1) Mary Mayo, (2) Sarah __, and (3) Ruth (Cole) Young; Lydia who married (1) Benjamin Higgins, and (2) Nicholas Snow; Hannah, who married John Done; Joshua, who married Hannah Scudder; Bethia who married Rev. Thomas Prence's Widow Mary, Formerly the Widow of Thomas Howes, and the Inventory of Her Estate," MD 6:230; Dawes-Gates 2:692 give other dates for (3) and (4) and supplies the name Quicke). His children by Patience Brewster were Rebecca, who married Edmond Freeman; Mercy, who married John Freeman; Hannah, who married (1) Nathanel Mayo and (2) Jonathan Sparrow; and Thomas, who died before 13 March 1672/73 in England. His children by Mary Collier were Jane, who married Mark Snow as his second wife; Mary, who married John Tracy; Sarah, who married Jeremiah Howes; Elizabeth, who married Arthur Howland; and Judith, who married (1) Isaac Barker and (2) William Tubbs (Dawes-Gates 2:693). In his will dated 13 March 1672/73, proved 5 June 1673, he named his wife Mary; his seven surviving daughters, Jane, the wife of Mark Snow; Mary Tracy; Sarah Howes; Elizabeth Howland; Judith Barker; Hannah; and Mercy; his grandson Theophilus Mayo; his granddaughter Susanna Prence, the daughter of his deceased son Thomas; his son John Freeman; Lydia Sturtevant; and his brother Thomas Clark (MD 3:203). His chagrin over Arthur Howland's eventually successful suit for the hand of his daughter Elizabeth is related in the text, and he probably was not happy over the marriage of two of his daughters to sons of Edmond Freeman. The mention in his will of his deceased son Thomas's daughter Susanna Prence would indicate that he died without surviving male issue in the Prence line. .... etc.

  • SPARROW, RICHARD--Richard Sparrow was on the 1633 freeman list. He served in various public capacities, such as juryman, highway surveyor, and constable for Plymouth (PCR, passim). On 24 June 1639 Mary Moorecock, with the consent of her father-in-law (probably step-father), apprenticed herself to Richard Sparrow and his wife Pandora for nine years (PCR 1:128-9) On 2 October 1650, Thomas Shrive was presented for pilfering corn from Richard Sparrow's barn, and Sparrow was presented for concealing Shrive's crime (PCR 2:162). Sparrow moved to Eastham, where he was elected a deputy 6 April 1653 (PCR 3:24). In his will dated 19 November 1660, inventory 22 January 1660/61, he named his wife Pandora, son Jonathan, and grandchildren John Sparrow, Priscilla Sparrow, and Rebecca Sparrow (MD 12:57). A more complete account is given in Dawes-Gates 2:763-68, which shows that he had only one known child, Jonathan, who married (1) Rebecca Bangs (2) Hannah (Prence) Mayo and (3) Sarah (Lewis) Cobb, having six children by his first wife and three

Biography

Jonathan Sparrow was born October 26, 1633. Jonathan Sparrow passed away on March 21, 1706.[1] He was the only son of Richard Sparrow and Pandora Bangs who emigrated from Kent, England, to the colony of Plymouth, New England, in 1633. Most sources agree Jonathan was an infant when they arrived in America.

Jonathan Sparrow's children by his first wife, Rebecca Bangs Sparrow were:

Rebecca Sparrow, b: 30 Oct 1655

John Sparrow, b: 2 Nov. 1656

Priscilla Sparrow, b: 13 Feb 1658

Lydia Sparrow, b: ca. 1662

Elizabeth Sparrow, b. 1663

Jonathan Sparrow Jr. , b: 9 July 1665

[One family genealogy also credits Jonathan & Rebecca with 2 more daughters: Mary, b. 5 March 1659; and Apphia, 11 Dec. 1660.][2]

His children by his second wife, Hannah Prence were:

Patience Sparrow

Richard Sparrow[3]

Jonathan Sparrow grew up in the fledgling town of Plymouth, New England. He and his parents moved across Plymouth Bay to settle Nauset (aka Eastham), on Cape Cod, around 1650, when he would have been 16-17 years old. He married his first wife in Eastham, Cape Cod, in October 1654 and established a homestead there. It is clear from his later positions that he was an educated, literate man.

Although he took little part in the colony's public life before his marriage, afterwards he became quite active. His name was listed among the legal voters at Eastham on May 22, 1655; he was named a Constable in 1556; he was admitted and sworn a Freeman in June, 1663; he was engaged as Eastham's School Master in 1665; he was an attorney for some townsmen in a lawsuit; he was named a Deacon of the local Congregational (Puritan) Church, and he also joined the Eastham militia. As such, he served as a Captain in "King Philip's War" (1675), defending Plymouth and the Cape against now-hostile Indians. On December 19, 1675, he participated in the great Narragansett fight as first lieutenant of Captain John Gorham's company, it being the second company in the Plymouth County battalion under Major William Bradford. After the Plymouth & Massachusetts Bay colonies united in 1691, Captain Jonathan Sparrow was designated as a Representative to the Massachusetts General Court at Boston until 1702. He also spent 18 years on the Governor's advisory committee for Barnstable (Cape Cod) County. By any reckoning, he was a local "notable" by his death in 1706.[4]

Birth

26 OCT 1633 - Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts[5][sic= this is impossible as Eastham (Cape Cod) was not settled until 1645. His acknowledged birth date is Oct. 26, 1633, but his birth place remains unproven as his parents emigrated from Kent, England to Plymouth, New England in 1633-34. Most historians believe he was born in England.] Residence

1695 - Barnstable County (Cape Cod), Massachusetts[6] Note
