Captain Joseph Bennett was the son of William Bennett and Abigail Hickock. He was born on September 17, 1745 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was baptized there on September 22, 1745. In January of 1778, he was Lieutenant of the 6th Company of the 4th Regiment. In November 1780, he was a Captain. His first wife died in early 1786. Later that year, he married 2nd, Abigail Sherwood the widow of Nathan Bennett. She had a son Isaac by her first marriage.

Joseph and Abigail had 5 children, all born in Fairfield and baptized in Westport:

Abigail died in 1805. Later that year, Joseph married 3rd, Sarah Sturgis, the widow of Stephen Gorham. Sarah died in 1812, and he married 4th Elizabeth _____. The estate of his 2nd wife, Abigail, was not administered until November 24, 1813. Joseph wrote his will on June 21, 1819. He died at the age of 74 on November 19, 1819 in Westport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. His will was proved on November 29, 1819. His will mentions his wife and all the children from his 2nd marriage along with his grandson William - son of Joseph Sherwood. It also mentions his three youngest daughters from his first marriage, Rhoda - the widow of Robert Taylor, and the children of his deceased daughters Sarah and Lydia.
