Joseph was a farmer and hotel keeper. He served as Deacon of the Glastonbury Congregational Church and represented the town twelve times in the state legislature. He was Captain of the 7th Co. in Col Fisher Gray's Btn. of Gen Wadsworth 's Brigade in Washington's Army, and served in the battle s of Long Island and White Plains.
