About Capt. Lewis Bobo

Lewis Bobo was the son of Spencer Bobo Sr. and wife Jane Wofford. He was born in 1736 in Caroline County, Virginia and died March 7, 1808, in Union County, South Carolina. He was buried at the Old Baptist Church Cemetery, Union County, South Carolina. His grave is now in Padgett's Creek Baptist Cemetery, Cross Keys, Union County, South Carolina.

Lewis married Sarah Solomon in c.1757 in Albemarle County, Virginia. She was born about 1740 and died about 1809. They had eleven children.

Lewis Bobo was granted a judgement against John Honey for 2 Pounds, 17 Shillings, 9 Pence current money. (Caroline Co., VA Order Book 1755-58, p. 217)

Lewis Bobo's name appears on a variety of land documents and tax lists. Here is a short list:

  • 8 March 1760. Thomas Hill 447 acres in Granville Co in the Parish of St John on Isingglas the waters of Shocco Creek, joining William Williamson, Brittain Jones, John Gaunt, John Thornton, Hills line and the sd Isingglas signed by his mark. Witnesses Tho Jones, William Matthews. Surveyed 5 October 1759 Sworn chain carriers Lewis Bobo, Jno Wood, Wi Churton Surveyor (North Carolina Patent Book 11, Entry 1650, p. 379)
  • "Sherwood Harris 28 November 1760, 525 acres in Granville Co in the Parish of St John on both sides of Fishing Creek, joining Harris's line. Signed Sherrd Harris Witnesses Will Hurst, Lewis Bobo..." (North Carolina Patent Book 11, Entry 1727, p. 396)
  • Lewis Bobo on list of taxables in Shocco District, Granville County in 1762. ("Gantrees" Newsletter of the Gant Family of America, Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 10)
  • Land plat for 700a of land in Berkeley Co., between the fork of Broad and Saluda Rivers and on a small branch called Woffords Branch of the Tyger River and bounded by Wofford Branch, Barnett Branch and the land of Amanuel (Emanuel) Stephens and by a vacant land, surveyed 7 May 1770 by Enoch Pearson. Said plat delivered to owner, Lewis Bobo. (Leonardo Andrea, #10) The tax return on this land was made by Willi 2.Title: LDS
  • In 1770 Lewis received a grant of 700 acres in Berk County, South Carolina and moved his family there. His brother Sampson moved to South Carolina, receiving a grant for 450 acres on the Tyger River.

Lewis Bobo was a Master Mason; the first lodge of the Masons was located in Charleston, South Carolina; the second held in a cabin loft owned by Lewis Bobo.

Lewis wrote his will on June 14, 1805 (see copy below), in which he names all his wife and all eleven children. The will was probated May 10, 1806.

Will of Lewis Bobo

"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I, Lewis Bobo, of the District of Union and the state of South Carolina, being of perfect health and of sound mind and understanding do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (To Wit)

First of all I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Sarah, the use and benefit of all real Estate, real and personal, during her natural life and widowhood of my wife Sarah.

Second - It Is my will and desire that at the death of my wife Sarah or expiration of her widowhood the whole of my Estate remain shall be sold at twelve months credit and monies arising from said sale shall be equally divided amongst my children (To Wit) Elizabeth Shelton; Sampson Bobo; Solomon Bobo; Sally Norman; Pattey Smith; Jeaney Peay, Polly Rhoads; Migail Cooper; Nancy Ray; Kindred Bobo and Dicy Holcomb and their heirs forever

Thirdly - and lastly, I hereby make and appoint my beloved wife, Sarah, Solomon Bobo and Kindred Bobo full and sole Executrix and Executors of this my Last Will and Testament, revoking, disanulling and making void all former Wills and Bequests by me made and declare this only to be my last Will and Testament.

I witness, whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fourteenth day of June Anno Domini 1805."
