News was received in town on Sept. 17 of a mishap to an Auckland coasting vessel, the cutter Lark, in the Bay of Plenty, which cost the life of her captain, Mr Peter Jonas, a well-known coastal trading master of many years experience. Tho Lark is a fifteen-ton cutter, owned by Messrs Henderson and Spraggon, the well-known Auckland shipbuilders. The cutter was on her way from Tauranga to Matata with stores, and it is supposed that as she was making for the mouth of the river a heavy sea caught her and drove her on to the bar at the side, where the surf, breaking over her, washed the master overboard from his post at the helm. Captain Peter Jonas, who lost his life through the mishap to the cutter, was a well known coasting master. Source: Auckland Star (4 October 1890, p. 6).
