A captain in the Revolutionary War, legend has it that General Washington admired a rifle he had made and asked him to build one for him. Ralph Sr. delivered the gun personally to General Washington who thanked him and observed "I'm glad you have an "e" at the end of your name, because we will have no royalty (meaning earls) in America!"
