Capt. Samuel Floyd
First of the Floyd family in present-day Horry County, progenitor of most of the Floyd families in Horry, Marion, and Dillon Counties, SC and Robeson and Columbus Counites, NC. Descendants settled in SC, NC, GA, FL, AL, MS, TN, LA, AK, and TX.
Born: circa 1730 Northampton County, NC, Colonial US
Died: circa1812 Horry County, SC USA
Married: Ann Rowland in NC
Moved from Northampton County to Dobbs County, NC and then to Georgetown District - present day Horry County, SC.
Children:
There were probably at least 2 "Floyd Girls". It has been difficult tieing them together, but Sarah "Prudence" (Floyd) Reaves who married Rev. Solomon Reaves and Catherine who married Samuel Grainger are likely sisters to the brothers. Sarah and Solomon settled in present day and contiguous Columbus County and Catherine and Samuel nearby Samuel Sr. and Ann Floyd, based on census data.
Update 2 October 2022 from Susanne Floyd - on and off the grid:
I have gone back to the census data. I recommend that Andrew Floyd be removed as spouse of Ann Floyd and father to these men and that "Capt. Samuel Floyd" (yes, there is that), which needs more exploration from the SC Archives references to come be added as spouse and father.

Samuel Floyd (Sr) was born before 1755, perhaps well before. ...
It is possible that this is the same Samuel Floyd who, with his wife Ann, lived in Northampton Co., NC in the 1750's and 1760's. I have no solid proof that they are one and the same, but it needs to be looked into. There is good reason to think they are one and the same. First of all consider Austin/Orson Floyd (1755). He was born in this area (Hertford) and then moved to Dobbs Co., NC before moving to Horry Co., SC. Samuel is quite possibly his father, or at least an uncle.
This might be the same Samuel Floyd who is listed on the 1769 tax list in Dobbs Co., NC with two tithables (himself and his son James, who is listed by name). (1769 Tax List - Dobbs Co., NC). John Floyd and Thomas Floyd were also listed. This record proves that Samuel of Dobbs is the father of James Floyd. Is it our Samuel and James from Horry? Could be, but I can't say for certain.
Sometime between ca 1765 and 1769 Abraham Shepperd Jr. made a deed to Samuel Floyd in Dobbs Co. NC. Only the index survives, so we don't know what was transferred. Don't know if this is the same Samuel Floyd later of Horry Co., SC but it could be. (Dobbs Co., NC Deed Book 7, page 269 online at NC Grantor/Grantee Index of Johnston, Dobbs and Lenoir Counties).
Between ca 1771 and ca 1773 Samuel Floyd made a deed to Benjamin Shepperd in Dobbs Co., NC. (Dobbs Co., NC Deed Book 9, page 241 online at NC Grantor/Grantee Index of Johnston, Dobbs and Lenoir Counties).
He was listed on the 1790 census in Georgetown District:
He was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District:
1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)
1800 Georgetown Dist, Kingston Co., SC pg 774/388 Saml Floyd Senr 00001-00001-0-1
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Samuel Floyd (bef 1755)
1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Mrs. Floyd (bef 1755), wife
There was only one Samuel listed on the 1810 census in Horry. I believe it was the younger Samuel and not this one. This Samuel was either dead by then, or had moved away, or was living with someone else and not the head of household himself.
Children of Samuel Floyd. The 1790 census suggests there was at least one son and one daughter. Samuel and wife seem to be quite old by 1800, so all of their children were probably all grown and on their own by then. If this is the same Samuel who was in Dobbs Co., NC in 1769 then he is the proven father of a James Floyd, probably the same one who lived in Horry later on.
1. Unknown Son (bef 1774), home in 1790, gone by 1800.
2. Unknown Daughter (bef 1790), home in 1790, gone by 1800.

Now here is where local information and knowledge takes place - a review of the 1790 census the following names are listed as heads of households:
Samuel Floyd Jr. 1-0-2
James Floyd 1-2-3
Francis Floyd 1-4-3
Samuel Floyd 2-0-2
Thomas Floyd 1-2-4
Moses Floyd 2-2-3
The numbering corresponds to
Column 1 - Free white males over 16 years of age including heads of families
Column 2 - Free white males under 16 years of age
Column 3 - Free white femailes including heads of families
________________________________________________________
Of the Floyd men listed in the census of 1790, Samuel Floyd would be too young to have had a Samuel Jr. who was head of household. Frederick does not appear until the 1800 census so may be the other white male living in the household of Samuel Sr. As there were two women in that household, one may be the wife of Samuel Sr and the other the wife of Frederick or a sister. Frederick's children did not seem to have a birthdate before c. 1790. Even if as we all know, that as someone who might be a nephew of the same name would adopt the "Jr." suffix, it is not likely here given the dates of the other Samuels in the family.
Census is listed here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBZ-CF4 under Prince George Parish.

It seems clear that Samuel Floyd, Sr. was living in 1790 and that given the dates and names of the others, that they would be his children. I just do not believe that there is such a person as Andrew Johnson Floyd who married Ann Rowland. Samuel may have married Ann Rowland for she did exist and live on Drowning Creek, which as we all know growing up is the Pee Dee River. They all lived where the Pee Dee met the Lumber River.

Additional possible children listed in sources suggest Lewis H. Floyd, Moses Floyd, Catherine Floyd, Sarah Floyd, and Thomas Floyd. More research will needed to make those connections if they exist. MtDNA may make a difference for women if we can document it. I encourage all to take a MtDNA kit to see the possibilities.
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/156522533/person/4...
I think we can confirm Moses Floyd, Thomas Floyd, and Austin Floyd as descendants due to dates, later census data, and land transactions amongst parties and keep searching for connections for a Catherine and/or a Sarah Floyd, perhaps the Sarah "Prudence" (Floyd) Reaves who married Rev. Solomon Reaves as this was THE Floyd family in the region.
Lewis Floyd occured in later generations, I think. Son of James Rowland Floyd and War of 1812 veteran.
YDNA studies for Floyd family members are encouraged. Family Tree DNA has a Floyd Family DNA project. Consider participating if you are a male Floyd. SFG
